The New American Movement applauds the New Jersey Legislature for amending A3357. An end to pejorative language in statutory law and other legal documents that is used to describe the ability of individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities is a step in the right direction and in congruence with the principles set forth by the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.
It represents New Jersey’s commitment to promoting fully inclusive communities and refining the legal system. Furthermore, it honors the principles of people-first language and aims to have an impact on society’s attitudes towards the disability community.
The New American Movement hopes that other states follow New Jersey’s commitment to fully respect the rights of people with disabilities. Utilizing people first language is integral to assuring that people with disabilities are valued, viewed as individuals, dignified, and that their capabilities are honored.
