Annie Sims
Self Advocacy Assistant Annie Sims has been an active member of CAU for 38 years and is a respected employee. Annie works part time for CAU in the CAU Chat Center assisting staff, calling programs and as a mentor for other members and as a field coordinator for the New American Movement for People with Disabilities (NAM). Annie serve on the CAI Board at CAU helping members with any issues they might have. Annie has solidified her advocacy skills as a 2013 graduate of the Partners in Policymaking (PIP) program through the NJ Council on Developmental Disabilities. Annie was the president of Helping Hands and now serve as the Recording Secretary. Annie also is a member of CAU advocacy group The New American Movement for People With Disabilities where she attended an 8 week training on what is a mentor and is a graduate of our Sid Katz Mentorship program. As a Jumpstart member Annie has done presentation at schools and institutions. Annie is a strong advocate where she has met with Senators, Assembly people, Freeholders, testify at hearings, attended advocacy conferences, trainings and was actively involved in having a resolution signed by Mayor Bollllwage and the City Council of Elizabeth declaring March as Disability Awareness month for the city of Elizabeth. Annie is extremely involved in self- advocacy with the opportunities that she has found at CAU Annie has learned valuable employment skills as a self-advocate, a leader, mentor and an advocate for herself and for others. Annie has received the Colleen Frazier award for her work in advocacy. Annie loves going out with her friends, whether it be on recreational events and traveling to conferences for CAU. Annie passion is advocating for herself and others she never let anything break her in spite of the challenges facing her. |
